
Lampedusa: territory and position
Immersed in the
Mediterranean Sea, between the coast of Tunisia than Sicily, Lampedusa
and Linosa, and Lampione are three uninhabited islands that form the
archipelago of Pelagie. Le Pelagie, because of their position, represent a bridge between two continents, the European and African. Lampedusa
and Lamp are part of the African continental plate that became
separated from two million years ago, while the origin of Linosa, is
volcanic.
The three islands are very popular
and appreciated by tourists who choose this enchanting corner of
paradise to enjoy the crystal clear sea, the beautiful grounds, warm sun
and from April until October and the beaches of fine white sand.
Lampedusa
(whose coordinates are 35 ° 31 '0 "N, 12 ° 34' 47" E) is the largest of
the islands, and shows the elongated shape and an area of 20.2 square
kilometers. Island population of about 6,000 inhabitants located mostly in the south, where lies in a protected harbor. Practically
in the middle of the Mediterranean Lampedusa belongs geologically to
the African continent so that is closest to the African coast (113 km)
to Italian (Porto Empedocles-Ag-205 km). Lampedusa
is thus the southernmost town of Italy, south of Tunis and Algiers, the
soul of an exotic vacation or Italian as repeatedly has been called
"Tropic Italian".
